People of the Tides: Blessing and Dedication of Goldbelt Áakʼw Tide

Goldbelt shareholders, descendants, Elders, cultural leaders, employees, partners and guests gathered at Statter Harbor in Juneau, Alaska on Sept. 26 for the blessing and dedication of Goldbelt Áakʼw Tide, the newest catamaran in Goldbelt Transportation’s fleet. Guided by the theme “People of the Tides,” the ceremony honored the Áakʼw Ḵwáan, recognized their generations-long connection to the waters of Juneau and formally welcomed the vessel into service.
The program included remarks from shareholders Fran Houston, representing the Áakʼw Ḵwáan, and Paul Marks, who alongside his family, offered unifying words that called on our ancestors to watch over the boat and guide its safe passage. President & CEO McHugh Pierre reflected on what the addition of Goldbelt Áakʼw Tide represents for Goldbelt and its shareholders.
The vessel expands Goldbelt Transportation’s fleet and creates additional capacity to serve customers, grow marine operations and support future opportunities, including transportation to Goldbelt Aaní. Pierre thanked the board for its long-term vision and investment in Goldbelt’s future. He also recognized board members in attendance: Chair Craig Kahklen, Vice Chair Richard Beasley, Treasurer Gail Marie Dabaluz and Secretary Dr. Lisa-Marie Ikonomov.
After the blessing and dedication, dozens of attendees gathered near the vessel’s bow in blustery weather to watch Goldbelt Transportation General Manager Ken DiMarzio christen the vessel with a bottle of champagne. DiMarzio broke the bottle on his first swing, sending a spray of bubbles across the bow to joyous cheers from the crowd.
Goldbelt Áakʼw Tide was named through a shareholder and descendant naming contest that drew more than 400 submissions. The board selected the name submitted by Juneau shareholder Carleta Garcia. Following the ceremony, about 45 shareholders and guests sailed from Statter Harbor toward Goldbelt Aaní. As the vessel approached the West Douglas site, attendees were greeted by several humpback whales spouting off the starboard side.
Goldbelt Áakʼw Tide marks a significant expansion of Goldbelt Transportation’s marine fleet, adding capacity for private charters, mine transportation and other commercial needs while supporting future connections to Goldbelt Aaní. The investment strengthens a growing Goldbelt business and creates new opportunities to generate value for shareholders.
Gunalchéesh to the Elders and cultural knowledge bearers who guided the ceremony. Goldbelt’s board and leadership; the captain and crew; employees from Transportation, Shareholder Services, Communications, Safety and Risk, Facilities and event support; our project and harbor partners; and every shareholder and guest who helped welcome Goldbelt Áakʼw Tide.
