Goldbelt & ANCSA

1. Who is Goldbelt?
Goldbelt, Incorporated was created under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971. ANCSA is a historic agreement between the U.S. government and Alaska Native peoples that resolved land claims and established Alaska Native Corporations (ANC) in place of reservations. Under the Act, Regional, Urban, and Village Corporations were formed to manage land and assets for the benefit of the Indigenous peoples of specific areas. Hundreds of corporations were established, and the owners of those corporations are known as shareholders or owners. The formation of corporations was designed to promote economic self-sufficiency and self-determination.

ANCs were created for the benefit of shareholders but have since evolved into major economic drivers, benefiting not only Alaska Native communities but all Alaskans and Americans.

2. What is Goldbelt’s Role as an Urban Corporation?
For more than 50 years, Goldbelt has served as an Urban Corporation, making significant investments in Southeast Alaska communities and building infrastructure that supports sectors like tourism, mining, transportation, and security. Goldbelt has created diverse businesses that generate jobs, strengthen local economies, and improve the quality of life for shareholders and the broader Southeast Alaskan community.

Funds from Goldbelt’s federal contracting activities also have an economic impact across 38 U.S. states and 2 territories. As a merit-based, diversified corporation, Goldbelt’s operations span sectors including cybersecurity, IT, construction, logistics, healthcare, and engineering—supporting national security and critical public infrastructure both domestically and globally.

3. Who are Goldbelt’s Owners?
Goldbelt is the Alaska Native urban corporation for Juneau, Alaska, owned by more than 4,300 Alaska Natives who descend from the Tlingit and Haida peoples of Southeast Alaska. These owners have ancestral ties to the land that span over 10,000 years. Goldbelt owners carry forward an unbroken lineage of oral history, cultural knowledge, and community values passed down since time immemorial.

Approximately half of Goldbelt’s federal contracting profits are reinvested directly into owner benefit programs, such as scholarships, job training, language and culture preservation, distributions, and initiatives that uplift and support youth and elder populations. Goldbelt is not driven by individual gain—it is guided by a collective responsibility to strengthen communities, preserve culture, and honor the legacy of the people. This commitment to community impact sets Goldbelt apart, ensuring that its profits create lasting benefits at home.
